It’s Never Too Late to Develop an Ecommerce Website

To my absolute astonishment the UK supermarket chain Morrison’s, has just announced that they will be going into a multichannel expansion with the development of an online shopping site. Until hearing this news I am sure many of us believed that as one of the big four, Morrison’s was in a similar competitive position to Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s. This includes operating a fairly successful ecommerce website that reaches a continually growing market of online grocery shoppers.

However upon reflection of this news, and after browsing their website, I came to realise that the only supermarket branded, domestic delivery van I never saw was a Morrison’s vehicle. Almost all of us have seen 3 out of the big 4 delivery vans driving through residential streets.

Despite this surprising news the old saying of “better late than never” comes to mind. While they have certainly missed many first mover advantages of running an ecommerce website, Morrison’s do have the late mover advantage of learning from any previous trial and error mistakes of their competitors.

The Ecommerce Industry Is an Uphill Battle without the Right Support

Morrison’s will launch their ecommerce website titled ‘Morrison’s Cellar’ later this year and will focus on selling wine. They class this good as non-food and are still developing plans for a full online food delivery service.  However their chief executive, Dalton Philips explained that the online grocery service will only launch if they can create a profitable model.

Evidently Morrison’s are aware that they have a big game of catch up to play and it’s understandable, as well as smart, to enter the ecommerce market carefully with 3 fully established multichannel supermarkets to compete with. Not including of course other successful and differentiated grocery suppliers who operate online like Ocado, Waitrose and even Marks and Spencer. With the support of an experienced ecommerce solutions provider however, Morrison’s in time can certainly make an impact in the online grocery sector.
